Philip Kenolty is a Northumberland based sculptor working with stone.

“I love the permanence and variety of stone and its inherent beauty, my work simply elaborates a little on that”.

Influences include his long lasting interest in geomorphology as well as the work of the mid 20th Century British Modernist sculpture movement.

Self taught and working from his small studio his sculpting is predominantly abstract, producing shapes that are sometimes biomorphic, at others geometric, using a direct carving method and allowing the materials to influence his designs. He finds working with stone tactile and mind absorbing.

Philip grew up in Liverpool where his father’s wood carvings and the work of his grandfather, a master cabinet maker produced an early interest in the creative possibilities of materials. He spent much of his working life in the North East of England and started sculpting primarily after leaving fulltime employment in social work and further and higher education, and after the inspirational purchase by his partner of the gift of a sculpting starter kit from the Hepworth Gallery, Wakefield.

Thanks are due to photographer Graham Bradshaw for the production of the sculpture images appearing on this site.
